Marine Biomimicry: Microphyt’s Revolutionary Approach to Innovations

The Microphyt Symposium on Marine Biomimicry & Cosmetic Innovations concluded on Friday, September 27th, in Montpellier, bringing together over 50 participants at the Planet Ocean Aquarium. The event highlighted how marine life, especially microalgae, can inspire sustainable and high-performance innovations. Central to the symposium was Microphyt’s Camargue photobioreactors, which replicate natural processes to unlock industrial microalgae cultivation for various applications.

Biomimicry in Action: Inspired by the Motion of the Sea

Microphyt’s Camargue photobioreactor draws inspiration from the constant movement of the sea, where waves break and retreat, creating a dynamic and essential environment for marine ecosystems. This natural process mixes air and water, supporting oxygenation and nutrient distribution.

The photobioreactor mimics this dynamic through a two-phase flow system, enabling a continuous exchange between the culture medium, where the microalgae reside, and carbon dioxide (CO2) to support photosynthesis. This system ensures efficient gas exchange, consistent access to light, and an even nutrients distribution, while also preventing the formation of biofilms that could hinder growth. By leveraging nature’s own mechanisms, Microphyt maximizes the efficiency of its microalgae cultivation process.

A Human Heart-Inspired Pumping System

Microphyt’s technology also draws inspiration from the human heart, a vital biological pump that circulates delicate red blood cells throughout the body, delivering oxygen to all organs. This delicate process requires precise control to prevent damage to the cells.

In its Camargue photobioreactors, Microphyt features a gentle pumping system, inspired by the rhythm of the human heart, using membrane pumps that operate at low frequencies (30 to 120 beats per minute). This gentle rhythmic motion allows for the cultivation of all types of microalgae, including the most delicate species, enabling them to thrive and produce bioactive compounds efficiently.

Microalgae: A Natural Source of Unique and Valuable Properties

Microalgae are highly resilient organisms, capable of adapting to extreme environmental conditions, , making them a valuable resource across various industries. These organisms are capable of withstanding significant environmental stresses, both abiotic and biotic. Abiotic stresses include challenges such as temperature fluctuations, salinity, light intensity, pH variations, and nutrient deprivation. On the other hand, biotic stresses stem from threats like predation and competition with other organisms. Microalgae have evolved unique mechanisms to overcome these conditions, making them highly

Microphyt has developed several bio-inspired active ingredients that tap into the unique properties of specific microalgae:

  • Dunapure: Extracted from Dunaliella tertiolecta, known for its astringent properties, ideal for anti-blemish care applications.
  • Luteana & Luteana Scalp: Derived from Tisochrysis lutea, this species is known for its extraordinary adaptability, making it suitable for both sensitive skin and scalp treatments.
  • Phycoage & Phycosi: Sourced from Phaeodactylum tricornutum, this microalga surprisingly contains genes coding for human collagen, elastin, and fibronectin, essential for skin structure. It also contains biofunctional silicium, improving both the resistance and elasticity of tissues, making them valuable not only in cosmetics but also in health and nutrition sectors

Nature as a Blueprint for the Future

Microphyt’s use of marine biomimicry reflects how natural systems can drive transformative innovations across multiple industries. By replicating the sea’s motion and the human heart’s circulation, Microphyt has developed advanced technologies to efficiently harness the potential of microalgae. These natural organisms offer immense promise, providing sustainable and versatile solutions for the future of industries ranging from beauty to nutrition, to food and beyond.
